The
Life & Death of Glaciers |
|
|
The Life & Death of Glaciers is a one-hour public television
show featuring climate change issues in the heavily glaciated
St. Elias Mountains of western Canada and southeast Alaska.
In the words of Vancouver-based glaciologist Dr. Garry Clarke,
“For glaciers, the St. Elias is almost the perfect habitat.
It’s got everything going for it. It’s high latitude, which
means closer to the North Pole than most glaciers. Second
of all, it’s high elevation, so as you move up in the atmosphere,
things get cooler so there’s a better place for the ice to
be retained. And then the large amounts of precipitation off
the Pacific, so you’ve got nourishment.”
The perfect home for glaciers is also the perfect place to
study the effects of climate change on their survival.

|
During
the summer of 2007, The Duncan Group began a five-year project
using Sony HDCAM high definition video to document the glaciers,
rivers and wildlife of the St. Elias range. Our goal is to help
tell the story of human impact on this dramatic ecosystem. Our
recent work complements nearly two decades of photographic documentation
of well-known glaciers in the region including surging glaciers
such as the Lowell Glacier and Tweedsmere Glacier as well as
retreating glaciers such as the Walker Glacier.
The completed film makes use of photographic comparisons in
glaciers over more than two decades. In addition, the film will
include discussion and graphic comparisons of glaciers in the
region going back to the beginning of the so-called “Little
Ice Age.” The impact of climate change on forests and wildlife
will also be addressed. |
Production
of The Life & Death of Glaciers will continue through summer,
2010. The project producers are Chip Duncan and Bob Huck from
The Duncan Group with Chip Duncan as the writer/director.
Acclaimed Alaskan wilderness guide Bart Henderson is working
as a project consultant. The
film features interviews with several well-known glaciologists
and geologists from the region who have studied the glaciers
of the St. Elias Range extensively.
Since 1991, Duncan and Henderson have completed roughly a
dozen journeys together throughout the St. Elias region and
the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge north of Alaska’s Brooks
Range. During that time, Duncan has accumulated extensive
footage of a variety of wildlife, rivers and glaciers.
The Life & Death of Glaciers will be presented to public television
viewers nationwide in 2011 by Iowa Public Television (IPTV.org).
The Duncan Group and IPTV have successfully collaborated on
public television documentaries for more than a decade.
